When I draw a shape in Inkscape and set its fill to a solid color, I cannot see it.

You may have the opacity of the color set to zero. Select your object, go to Object > Fill & Stroke, click on the first tab (Fill), and check what numbers are in the A line and in the Opacity lines. The A line should be at 255 and the Opacity should be 100%, like this:
